Running Your Home Business

It can be a luxury or a necessity to run your business from home, but either way it takes a lot of planning and forward thinking to do it properly and make it work for you.  The articles on this site will give you the advice, tips and help you need to set up a business working from home successfully.

There are many reasons for home working including family commitments, disability, travel restrictions or you may just decide that its what you want.  You could either start up your own company and dictate your work load and hours, or you could ask your employer if they would consider you working from home.  A lot of employers are open to this now days as the stresses and strains of the daily grind are more prominent and businesses are encouraged to keep employees happy and in a healthy work environment.  However working from home isn't a breeze and although there are many positives (no travelling, home comforts etc) there are also a lot of negatives so you need to be open to the situation and be realistic with your expectations.

Any type of work will come with common business problems, even if you are just a little start up from home, but don't let this put you off, with the right help and guidance you have every chance of being successful.  Here are a few simple steps to start you off on the right track:

Business Plan -  Whether you are expanding a hobby into a career or taking on a mature money making business opportunity you will need to devise a thorough business plan.  Make sure it covers every eventuality and situation from office space and furniture to production of products or services, financial targets and budgets right through to your target market and weird and wonderful ideas!  With the back up of a business plan you will always have something to refer to when the going gets tough and you need to take it back to basics.

Savings -  When running your home business you can become emotionally involved and may plough every penny into making it a success.  But its important to put money aside and have some savings. You never know when work might dry up, every industry has a quiet time of year and you need to prepare for that, having some money put aside will mean that you wont have to defer mortgage payments or live on beans on toast!  Having some savings will also benefit your company and help it progress into a bigger and better provider or service.  You never know when you might need to step up a gear in order to keep up with the competition, this may mean investing in new technology or products that you could not usually buy from a normal monthly income.

Work And Life Balance - Prioritising and organising yourself is key to running your home business, you will find it hard to work effectively if your daily routine is all jumbled up in one.  You need to ensure that your work and personal life is kept totally separate and you need to have the discipline to walk away from your business at the end of your working day.  Devise a detailed plan of your week and build in time for everything including domestic chores, shopping, social time, sleep and of course work!  Stick to your schedule so that you feel in control and do not get stressed with your work life balance.

Office Space - You will need to find an adaptable space at home to run your business effectively, it needs to be a room that has plenty of space for all of your equipment and storage needs, it should also be somewhere that other people do not need to use consistently throughout the day e.g. the kitchen, and you need to be away from general distractions around your home such as the tv and phones.  Where possible try and make your 'office' blend into your house so when you are not working you don't feel like you are surrounded by reminders of your day job.

Stay Focused - When running your business from home its very easy to get distracted by everything but your work so it may take some time and will power to eventually become disciplined enough to ignore day time tv, surfing the internet and catching up with family or friends.  Stick to your schedule (as above) and then you will have time to do it all!

Invest In Services -  Working for yourself can be quite daunting as you are expected to deal with every aspect of you business, and some areas you may not be entirely familiar with.  So be wise and invest in services to help you, don't see them as a financial drag though as without them you may struggle to move forward.  Hire an accountant or financial advisor to deal with your budgets and taxes, they will also know the best ways to save you money and what benefits you may be entitled to.  Consider advertising your business, investing now on promotions and marketing could ensure the head start and communication that you need to get everything up and running and on the road to success.

Equipment -  In order to compete with your competition you need to purchase the right equipment even if  its not what you personally want.  You need to think with your business head and not your heart when setting yourself up, so even if you prefer hand writing letters you will find that you will struggle to meet the demands of your customers or clients who will all expect an email.

Positive Thinking -  If success doesn't happen overnight when running your home business don't give up.  It will require a lot of dedication and a lot of hard work, but always remember your main goals and reasons for wanting to work from home and keep the momentum going.

Find Support - When running your home business becomes a struggle and you are finding it hard to think positively then make sure you get some home business help and advice, there are lots of great websites and organisations such as Business Link who can talk things through with you and get things back on track.  You could also join chat forums and networks to meet other people who work from home and share your experiences.
